Astons Express

Stumble upon the newly opened Aston Express at Kopitiam food court at Golden Wall Centre. Decided to give it a try.

I ordered the Lemon Lime Chicken which was chargrilled.

For $5.90, the chicken came with choice of 2 side dishes. There is quite a decent selection of sides too.

Good enough for me to want to return to try the other items on the menu.

Shanghai 09 - part 2

An ex-colleague bought me dinner in Shanghai. Wanted him to bring me to something very local, but due to time factor, we ended up in a popular local chain restaurant, 小南国。

Pardon the quality, that was the best I could do with the Coolpix. Lighting was terrible and the table top was glass, so very difficult to get decent clean background.

烤麸 - some fried bean curd

酱鸭 - duck in special gravy

醉鸡 - drunken chicken

黄油蟹炒年糕 - fried crab with shanghai niangao

Shanghai 09 - part 1

Been really busy the past 2 months. Here's the long overdue post from the trip to Shanghai during end of July.

小笼包 (xiaolongbao) from 豫园/城隍庙

Supposedly famous/must try joint. Very crowded, filled with tourists both local and foreign. This joint sells nothing but 小笼包 and an egg soup. I consider this place over-rated. It is tasty but slightly oily and the meat fatty.

Lunch at Bali Thai

Thanks to Linda and Andy, we got invited to lunch at Bali Thai.

Food was not too bad, service was very slow though but I must admit the Suntec outlet was packed during lunch time.

old stuff from Sakae Sushi

Have been avoiding Sakae Sushi for a while. The queues are long, and quality of food has dropped. Twice, in different outlets that I have been served not pipping hot teppanyaki items. Got dragged into this one some time in April 09 by Ryan who is still thrilled by sushi on conveyor belt.

While I didn't enjoy my meal, at least I got some decent shots.

Shin Yeh (欣叶)at Liang Court

A joint venture between Shin Yeh restaurant group from Taiwan and the Tung Lok Group restaurant serves "once forgotten home cooked Taiwanese dishes" (from their website). Ambience is pretty nice, but I do find the space between tables a little tight. Food is pretty good but pricey, as you can expect from a Tung Lok restaurant.

After you look at menu and/or photos below, I am sure you will agree this is expensive Taiwanese Porridge! hahahahaha

Braised Duck

Steamed minced pork with salted egg yolk

Cabbage stewed with sliced pork and salted fish

三杯鸡
虎咬猪 fancy name for kongbapao, but it was pretty good

Desserts

Swensen's @ Tampines Mall

Had a not too positive experience at Swensen's a while back. It was a Sunday morning, we arrived before the lunch crowd. The aircon was freezing cold, maybe because we were all in shorts and bermudas as we just finished swimming.

The soup was not hot, had to ask them to change. My latte was also not hot! Maybe it was really not my day, Evan topple a glass of water before the food arrived and toppled a glass of apple juice just as I was asking for the bill!!!!

The only positive was the Cheeseburger Pizza was really good.

Mushroom Soup

Ayam Penyet Ria

Just realised I have quite a few photos from Ayam Penyet Ria. First introduced to this Indonesian restaurant a few years back when they had 2 outlets in Lucky Plaza. But I patronise the Novena Square 2 branch the most.

If you like fried and crispy stuff, you have to try this. Ayam Penyet means smashed chicken. All the fried entrees are served together with fried tofu, soya bean cake, some boiled kankong, cabbage and blachan chilli. The blachan is super spicy.

Bawai Penyet (smashed pomfret)

Bakso Penyet (smashed beef balls)

Chicken Wings

Bakso Ria Sop (Beef Balls soup)
Pempek Palembang (Fish Cake)
Lime Juice and Happy Soda

Food Junction @ Great World City

This is one of the nicer foodcourt within a shopping centre. Nicely decorated, with funky tables and chairs. They even have a family corner which is more kids friendly, no playground though.

Apparently, some inbound agencies bring Japanese tourists to have their lunch here. The tour guides actually brought their guests on an orientation and gave some recommendation before leaving them to figure out what to eat. They have some sort of a pre-purchase coupon system for the tourists.

Tea @ Al Dente Pronto

The boys were driving us nuts while we were shopping at Great World City. So called a timeout and had a break at Al Dente Pronto.

Service here was good, pricing reasonable and quality very good.

新源记 Xin Yuan Ji

Heard a lot of good things about this restaurant (if you can call it that) at Tan Quee Lan Street. When we got there, there was a long queue for lunch.

Apparently, this shop started from People's Park or Chinatown, moved to Redhill before the current location. Got all these information from all the newspaper cuttings on the walls.... and all the photos showed long queues wherever they were.

The fried fish bee hoon tasted pretty good, I only had a sip and it was rich and tasty.

My order was the XO fish head bee hoon. Expensive due to the XO and they use red snapper. Taste-wise, not bad. Can taste the XO during the first few mouths, but somehow, it kinda faded away during the rest of it. Probably the tongue got used to the XO. Anyway, I wouldn't be able to tell whether it was really XO or VSOP. For $9.50, it was my first and last time trying this.

We also ordered 虾酱鸡。It was nicely done, crispy on the outside and juicy inside.

Basically this place is like a zichar stall with aircon. I find it a little overpriced even the quality is good. If we go back, I will try the fish head curry which seem to the other signature dish.

Nasi Padang at Minang House, Lucky Plaza

Went for a quick lunch at Lucky Plaza after our measurement at Marriott Hotel. KT wanted to eat Nasi Padang so we found this place.

The Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) was really tasty, we tried both the normal one and the one with chilli. The Begedil (fried potato cake) was great too, interestingly, there was diced dried beef inside. The other 2 items were tried (sayur lodeh and omelette) was just regular.

Total damage was $26.30 for 2 pieces of chicken, 3 begedils, sayur lodeh, omelette, 3 rice and 3 lime juices.

Pork Chop Rice @ The Bistro, NUSS Suntec Guild House

I found that I often end up ordering this when I dine at The Bistro at NUSS Suntec Guild House.

Portion is generous and the presentation is pretty nice. The other 2 items I like from their menu is the fried chicken wings and ngoh hiang.

My only complaint - lighting is not really condusive for photography, hahahaha.
